It appears the crew fabricated a cut-out of Junior and used it to hold the hood up.
Richard Petty / Lowe's ~ 1970
Richard Petty's first sponsorship, in his racing career, was promoting Lowe's riding mowers.
This began in 1968 and led to a Petty Blue Plymouth Superbird give-away (1970), and the custom "Richard Petty Special" riding mowers built in 1971 & 1972.

New options for 1970 Challenger
Look at how far forward the rear spoiler is positioned, obviously to clear the R/T stripe.
I do not believe this mounting location was ever used on the production models.
